Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program

This program is a 4 year training program with standards approved in the State of Virginia. It requires that each apprentice receive a minimum 8,000 hours of on-the-job training in the electrical construction industry. During the course of the apprenticeship, each apprentice can be transferred to different electrical contractors. This affords the apprentice the opportunity to receive varied experiences during their apprenticeship. The Richmond Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee makes all placements with electrical contractors.
While in the Apprenticeship Program, apprentices are required to attend 900 hours of classroom related instruction. This instruction is setup in the follow manner over the 6 periods.
During the apprenticeship, an apprentice will attend school one day a week from 1pm to 7pm, year round. While attending school, apprentices will be taught the curriculum set in place by the electrical training Alliance. This curriculum consists of the following:

- AC THEORY
- HISTORY OF THE IBEW AND NECA
- JOB SAFETY
- BLUEPRINT READING
- CONDUIT BENDING
- SOLID STATE ELECTRONICS
- DIGITAL ELECTRONICS
- STRUCTURED CABLING
- MOTOR CONTROLS
- OPTICAL FIBER
- FIRE ALARM AND SECURITY SYSTEMS
- PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLS (PLC)
- TRANSFORMERS
- NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE
- NECA Basic Foremanship
- IBEW Business Start Up
Apprentices will receive pay increases during the course of their apprenticeship based on the amount of work hours they have successfully completed in the program and successful school performance.
Apprentice wages based upon a percentage of the journeyman's hourly wage rate and advancements are made during the four years of apprenticeship.
Current hourly pay rate:JOURNEYMAN WIREMAN = $31.46 per hour
